UK Supreme Court visits Italian Constitutional Court

On Friday 10 July 2026, the first direct exchange between the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and the Italian Constitutional Court took place in Rome.

The President of the Italian Court, Giovanni Amoroso, welcomed the President of the UK Supreme Court, Lord Reed, along with Lord Stephens and Registrar Celia Cave to a study meeting, entitled “Mechanisms of Constitutional Review and Cases of Particular Importance”.

The members of the two courts took part in two sessions over the course of the day. In the first, they focused on the different types of constitutional review used in the two countries, with presentations given by the President Amoroso and Lord Reed; in the second, they examined how particularly significant recent cases were handled by the two courts, with the presentations given by judges Marco D’Alberti and Lord Stephens.

It is hoped that the successful visit will lead to enhanced cooperation between the two courts in the future.
