Response sent on 22 July 2021:

The UK Supreme Court partially holds the information to one of your questions but does not hold information relating to the rest of your request. I will deal with each aspect of your request in turn.

I would like to know how many freemasons are judges??

The UK Supreme Court does not hold this information.

How many civil servants are freemasons??

The UK Supreme Court does not hold this information.

I can confirm that the UK Supreme Court holds the information about who judges swear their oath to. When Justices of the Supreme Court are sworn in, they take two oaths: the Oath of Allegiance and the Judicial Oath. They are as follows:

Oath of Allegiance:

"I, [name], do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to law."

Judicial oath:

"I, [name], do swear by Almighty God that I will well and truly serve our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth the Second in the office of Justice of the Supreme Court, and I will do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages of this realm, without fear or favour, affection or ill will." An example of these oaths can be found at minute 00:06:24 of the video recording of Lady Rose's swearing in ceremony, available on YouTube at the following link: Lady Rose's swearing in ceremony

More information about the Judicial Oath can also be found on the Courts and Tribunals Judiciary website, at the following link: Judiciary Oath.

The above four questions are not requests for recorded information.

I should explain that the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) can only be used to access recorded information held by a public body. It cannot be used to obtain guidance, opinions, conjecture or legal advice.

For example, a request for recorded information would be for a copy of a policy, rather than an explanation as to why we have that policy in place.

We only hold information relating to the UK Supreme Court (UKSC) and not the wider court service; the role of this court is to act as the final court of appeal in the UK for civil cases, and for criminal cases from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UKSC hears cases of the greatest public or constitutional importance affecting the whole population.
